Survivor

Your scars are beautiful, they show me strength, courage and POWER

Power over the BUMPS in life and PAIN that a sad day can bring

Let me kiss your beautiful head after you have SHAVED

I watch you shed the weight

You are a NEW WOMAN, re birthed and so you must LIVE for your sisters

And your life will honour those who didn’t survive life’s BUMPS

“W”

There was a crashing sound, I jumped out of my sleep

With my eyes still half shut I tried to make out what was happening

SHE was in tears on the ground fighting a shadow over her

This dark shadow was moving very fast

Without thinking I ran over –

Wrapped my arms as tight as I could to help HER

But he was stronger than me, than US

He swung me from him his side which landed me in the wall

The lamp on the table was shattered and some broken glass cut me

I sat there BLEEDING as TEARS and BLOOD ran from me

I sat there HELPLESS on the floor looking at HER

HE was enraged with so much ANGER that he didn’t notice me and what he’d done

So SHE ran to ME

Even though she had her fair share of bruises – SHE still RAN to ME

WE RAN TOGETHER ….OUTSIDE to ESCAPE

ESCAPE HIM, not sure what the next step would be but-

WE HAD EACH OTHER and that was ENOUGH

Dear Ms. Henry

Dear Ms. Henry,

For you I will REMEMBER how you laughed, in classes and in your office

Those jokes you told without us noticing that you were inserting a life long lesson

I will REMEMBER how you LISTENED and not just heard..you listened because you CARED

I will REMEMBER you as being more than just a lecturer,

You were a COMMUNICATOR…

You were a  FRIEND

I will REMEMBER talking to you on facebook because you just wanted to catch up on how i was doing even though i left college over a year ago

I would wish on a shooting star to have one more day with you again…

Just enough time to tell you THANK YOU, I don’t think I ever really said it and for you touch my life like I was the first student you got close to is POWERFUL because somehow with all the craziness in your own life, you found time to make SO MANY STUDENTS feel just the same

For you Ms. Charmaine Henry…I WILL always REMEMBER YOU.

Under my Christmas tree-For Samuel Morant

I wish I could wake up and see dad under the Christmas tree

That maybe the heavens returned him for Christmas

A part of you feels like it’s life and you are expected to understand and move on

But when I look at the pieces I see parts of him everywhere

Like today, how do I put the pieces together when today is his birthday?

Torn between missing him, being strong for the family, feeling like a piece of me is missing and still trying to be happy for the festive season

but its a Christmas without dad,

But I express it a day at a time, one tear at a time

Remembering to make every moment special

So in honour of him I remind all of us to not delay love

Let love flow everyday, tell relatives & friends how you really feel as often as you can

because its the worst feeling to have so much to say today that you should’ve said yesterday

I wish dad was under my Christmas tree

but I take comfort in knowing that on my Christmas tree, the angel on top will be filled with pieces of Dad.

In honour of Samuel Morant & the Morant family

Tribute to Mom

Perfection does not mean the exclusion of flaws

Just as Success does not mean always getting it right

Perfection means staying true to who you are

Success means staying optimistic in aid of perseverance

Which all combines to define strength

Then when you mold a woman with all these characters

She is defined as a strong woman

A mother

My mother

So thank you for staying true to you

For leaving footprints that I can never fill

But prints that I can use to guide myself

Happy Mother’s Day for all the years to come

Happy Birthdays for all the birthdays to come

And even Happy Heroes day for always being my HERO.

For all great women…mothers…daughters…females

Dawn Lindo

She lives through my fingers

She lives through my fingers

Her voice is heard through my novels, my plays, my performance

Her memory is valued through my actions

From this day forward for every poem I write she will rise from the ashes like the phoenix she is
